Project: A Dragon for the Baroque Theater in Český Krumlov
Date: 2022
The inspiration for the dragon's restoration was a black-and-white photograph from 1957 depicting a metal dragon — a Baroque theatre prop from the collection of Český Krumlov Castle, which measured 3 metres and was probably used in scenes depicting the struggle between good and evil or directly in scenes from the Legend of St George.
To this day, only the head and tail sections of the original dragon have survived. These sections formed the basis for a faithful replica. I crafted it according to carefully measured details of the preserved head and tail, placing great emphasis on authentic detailing whilst respecting the original material, technique and surface texture of the piece.
The new dragon is not merely a prop, but a genuine restoration of a historical artefact. During the Castle and Chateau Night, the replica came fully to life — it soared above the castle courtyard accompanied by pyrotechnic effects and period music as part of a staged performance of the legend of St George's battle with the dragon.
